Enjoy this modern recipe.

Ingredients

  • Outer peel of 4 thick-skin oranges
  • 1 quart rye whiskey
  • 1 1/2 pounds granulated sugar

Directions

Cut the orange peel into small pieces, removing the white part. Put in a 1/2-gallon glass jar with a screw top with 1 quart of good rye whiskey, adding 1 1/2 pounds of granulated sugar. (A good bourbon may be substituted to add to a fifth of rye, making the quart.) Shake the lightly closed jar 3 to 5 minutes daily for a month, by which time the sugar will be thoroughly dissolved and the decoction of orange essence well advanced. The longer it stands, the richer the flavor.

Yields 1 quart
