Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 envelop dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons soft shortening or oil
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups flour, unsifted

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In mixing bowl dissolve yeast in warm water. Add shortening or oil, salt, and sugar. Measure flour into cup by spoonfuls to avoid packing down the flour. Stir in half of the amount called for. Keep in mind that brands of flour vary and you might need more or less than the 3 cups. Stir the batter until smooth; add remaining flour and stir. Scrape down sides of bowl. When yeast dough has taken all of the flour it can, cover bowl with cloth and let dough rise until double in size. This will take about 1 hour. Beat dough about 25 strokes. Spread evenly in greased loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches. Cover pan with a cloth; allow to rise until about ½ inch from top (about 1 hour longer). Bake for 10 minutes. Lower heat to 325 degrees. Bake 25 minutes longer. Turn bread onto a rack.

Yields 1 loaf
