The Potomac River was a very important part of life at 18th century Mount Vernon. In addition to providing food, it was also a means of transportation. George Washington a small fleet of all different types of boats that were used for fishing and transporting goods and materials between the different areas of Mount Vernon. Some boats even brought goods to and from Alexandria or places even further away! Boats were also used for travel and helping people stay connected.
