A Place at the Stable

Guests will have the opportunity to meet Peter Hardiman, an enslaved groom whose talent with horses and mules was noted by George Washington. You'll learn about the work done in the stables and Peter's role directing other enslaved individuals at the site.

Horses at Mount Vernon

As an avid horseman, George Washington maintained a stable of horses. They provided transportation, pulled carriages, worked in the fields and wheat treading barn, and were used for fox hunting.

Nelson and Blueskin were two of George Washington’s favorite horses and carried him during the Revolutionary War.

Today at Mount Vernon, we have draft horses that pull wagons, plow, and harrow the fields.
