Integrate History & Steam Concepts

Examine early American medicine through the use of primary sources (including places!), reproduction objects, and character interpretations of George Washington's personal physician, Dr. James Craik. In addition to better understanding medical practices, procedures, and health management for the Washington family, you will also investigate what medical care for and within the enslaved community looked like.

During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore Mount Vernon's digital resources and discuss how to apply the STEAM-work behind medicine in the 18th century within the classroom.  Gain confidence in integrating history and STEAM concepts in an interdisciplinary context to support student learning while building a network of local peers. Attend with a teaching partner or collaborative team to design learning experiences to take back to your classroom, department, grade level, and/or school.
