The American Revolution & STEAM

As we approach the celebration of America's 250th anniversary in 2026, Mount Vernon will provide an additional opportunity for visitors to step back in time to the American Revolution through the Patriots' Path: A Revolutionary War Encampment. During this daily interpretation of what was life like for Continental soldiers and patriots during the Revolutionary War this year, we're excited to announce that this year's workshops will focus on the STEAM concepts behind the daily life of soldiers, military officers, and camp followers who traveled with the army.

Join the Education team and Nicole Foronda, Education Manager from the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum to explore how our greater Washington, D.C. area neighbors in Loudoun County provisioned the troops during the Revolution and how the American Revolution affected the tenant farmers across the colonies, particularly in 1775. Participants will also learn more about James Cleveland, manager of George Washington's River Farm, who spearheaded the tenant revolt in Loudoun County

During the workshop, you will participate in hands-on activities, analyze primary sources, explore digital resources, and discuss how to bring the STEAM work behind grain production and land grants during the American Revolution into your classrooms.

Gain confidence in integrating history and STEAM concepts in an interdisciplinary context to support student learning while building a network of local peers. Attend with a teaching partner or collaborative team to design learning experiences to take back to your classroom, department, grade level, and/or school.
