Often considered the world's first color periodical, the Botanical Magazine is more than just a few pretty pages. It is also a rare peek into Washington's scientific interests.
While we often think of Washington as a general or a president, we may more rarely consider him a scientist. But if the new government of the United States was Washington's great experiment for promoting human happiness, then his botanic garden was a space for him to test out his green thumb.
