Summer Residential Programs
The George Washington Teacher Institute Residential Programs are highly competitive four to five day educational experiences which bring teachers to Mount Vernon for an intensive course of study.
Participants immerse themselves in the exploration and discussion of lessons learned from the remarkable roles George Washington played as friend, husband, stepfather, farmer, slaveowner, general, founder and president.

These on-site, three-week summer fellowships are highly competitive and are based at the Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon.
Selected teachers will research and create Mount Vernon classroom resources that educate America’s students on the history of our founding era and George Washington.

The Mount Vernon History Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually to a Washington, D.C. Metro area History or Social Studies teacher who brings creativity and passion to his or her classroom; instills a love of learning in students; and deepens student understanding and appreciation of history.
