Editorial Notes
Early in his presidency, hundreds of individuals and groups wrote to George Washington, sending congratulations on his new position, and testing him on the nature of the new government. In this case, Washington was responding to the Protestant Episcopal Church, the new name of the American branch of the Anglican Church (also known as the Church of England). The two churches had broken apart several years before, after the American Revolution.
