Editorial Notes
With the establishment of the American Continental Army, there was much debate of the terms of service. Initially set to one year, Washington appealed to Congress for more devoted and experienced troops. By 1776, the term of service was extended to three years and by 1777 enlistments were extended to the duration of a war.
