Witness the treading process inside Washington's innovative 16-sided barn. Learn first-hand how animals separated wheat seeds from the stalk. Washington's interest in science and technology led him to develop a more efficient technique for threshing wheat.

Costumed staff will lead Mount Vernon's horses as they tread wheat in a replica barn that matches Washington's design. Afterward, watch staff demonstrate how to separate the seeds from the chaff using riddling and winnowing baskets.

Free Ticket Required

This demonstration requires a free ticket. Tickets will be distributed in the Barnyard on a first come first served basis, starting 15 minutes before each demonstration. Only five tickets per customer. To get a ticket, consult one of the costumed staff at the barn.

Treading demonstrations may be cancelled on little to no notice due to a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, staff availability, severe weather, availability of animals, and a heat index over 95° F.

One of Washington’s masterful farming innovations was a 16-sided barn designed for treading wheat—his most important cash crop. The barn at the Farm site is an exact replica of the original that was located on Washington's estate.
