Of this visit, Colonel Dodge recalled the following incident:
“Dr. Coué, the “every-day-in-every-way-we-are-getting-better-and-better” philosopher, when he heard I had been at Mount Vernon for forty years, put his hand upon my shoulder and said, “Colonel, just make up your mind to it and your forty years of service here will be followed by another forty.” He unfortunately neglected to follow his own prescription, for on his return to France, he died.”
