1871

Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich of Russia (1850–1908) was the fourth son of Tsar Alexander II. Known for his charm and international travels—including a celebrated tour of the United States—he was also involved in court politics and naval reforms during a transformative era for the Russian Empire. His visit is briefly described by Harrison Howell Dodge, Mount Vernon's long-time superintendent, his 1932 book Mount Vernon, its owner and its story:

Two years later [in 1871], Grand Duke Alexis was here. I remember seeing him and being impressed with his magnificent physique.
