According to Colonel Harrison Howell Dodge, Mount Vernon’s Superintendent, writing many years later:
“…I well remember how perturbed her official escort—one of our prominent naval officers—was when I assured him it was not at all necessary for him to bring ashore a strong force of marines to guard Her Highness an how haughtily he spurned the use of our coach because it was too plebeian for a lady of such distinction.”
