According to the Superintendent's Report of August 1942:
Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was brought to Mount Vernon on August sixth by the President and Mrs. Roosevelt. The party came by boat and was received at the wharf. After placing a floral tribute at the Tomb, Queen Wilhelmina paid a brief visit to the Mansion before returning with her escort to Washington by car.
In her syndicated newspaper column, "My Day," Eleanor Roosevelt described the experience:
The trip to Mt. Vernon on the "Potomac" was very pleasant. We lunched and chatted and landed immediately on arrival and the usual ceremony took place at George Washington's tomb. From there most of the party drove to the Mansion, though some of us walked up the hill.
There was time only for a brief glance at the rooms and then we drove to the National Cemetery in nearby Arlington, Va., to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
