While many remember George Washington’s famous friendship with the Marquis de Lafayette, fewer know of his close relationship with the Marquis de Chastellux, a French soldier and popular philosophe. Chastellux's Travels in North America in the Years 1780, 1781, and 1782 became a famous book in its own time and one of the most famous wartime accounts of Washington. In these volumes, Chastellux describes the people and sights he encountered during his travels, including brilliant descriptions of the natural settings and his respect and admiration for Washington.
In this episode, Dr. Iris de Rode joins us to discuss Chastellux’s famed tour, his often-controversial testimony of early America, and his deep and abiding friendship with George Washington.
