I shall make it the most agreeable part of my duty to study merit, and reward the brave and deserving."

" I shall make it the most agreeable part of my duty to study merit, and reward the brave and deserving. "

Address to the Officers of the Virginia Regiment | Thursday, January 08, 1756

Editorial Notes

These lines are from an address given on the occasion of the suspension of a member of the Virginia Regiment who was found guilty of cheating at a card game while playing with his fellow officers.  Washington used this opportunity to inform his fellow soldiers that "the strictest justice," along with deserved praise, would be "administred to all."
