About the Lafayette Bedchamber

This room is known as the Lafayette Room because the Marquis de Lafayette stayed here during his 1784 visit to Mount Vernon. Located in the northeast corner of the Mansion’s second floor, it was one of the most desirable guest chambers. Lafayette, the young French nobleman who volunteered as a general in the Continental Army, shared a deep and lasting friendship with George Washington, whom he regarded as a father figure.

The room features a reproduction of Charles Willson Peale’s 1781 portrait of Lafayette in Continental Army uniform, originally commissioned by Washington. After the Washingtons received a large family portrait from the Lafayettes in 1785, the single portrait of Lafayette was displayed in this chamber, reinforcing its association with their cherished friend.
