When George Washington became President of the United States, he and his First Lady understood that entertaining would be at the core of their diplomatic activities.
Both George and Martha held weekly entertainments, including dinner on Thursday night. The couple sought to set the table with porcelain and other objects for the residence that were sufficiently grand to impress foreign dignitaries but not to convey the impression of a royal court.
