Hired by George Washington as a clerk in January of 1774, George Young accompanied Washington on his Kanawha expedition at a salary of twenty-five pounds per year. Prior to working at Mount Vernon, Young had worked for a merchant in Bladensburg, Maryland.1 In 1774 and 1775, Young was provided with four pairs of breeches, a pair of drawers, a suit of clothes, a pair of spatterdashes, three waistcoats, a flannel waistcoat, and had a pair of leather breeches mended by the tailor at Mount Vernon.2
