Jame Boyd was a hired laborer assigned to a variety of jobs at Mount Vernon, including shearing sheep, making and resoling shoes, spinning shoe thread, and mending the bellows from the blacksmith shop. Boyd worked at Mount Vernon from 1775 until 1777.1 Between April of 1776 and January of 1777, Boyd received: sixty shad, one bushel of salt, five barrels of corn, twenty-eight pounds of bacon, 200 herrings, ten pounds of wool, and about three pounds in cash. During this same time period, he sheared over 300 sheep made 106 pairs of shoes, mended the bellows from the blacksmith shop, and resoled two pairs of shoes.2
