Our Birthday Gift to the Nation

In 2018, the MVLA launched an ambitious, multi-year initiative to fortify the very foundations of George Washington’s estate—an effort designed to prepare Mount Vernon for the world’s attention as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence. This historic milestone offers a unique moment for visitors and supporters to engage with the home of America’s founding father in a renewed and powerful way.
As we reach this pivotal year, Mount Vernon stands transformed. Fueled by the participation of more than 211,000 supporters nationwide, the Campaign for Mount Vernon has raised more than $275 million for preservation, education, and infrastructure initiatives. Years of meticulous planning, public engagement, educational expansion, and hands-on restoration have shaped the Mount Vernon that guests will experience throughout this Semiquincentennial moment and into the future.
As the nation celebrates this milestone birthday, the estate will have undergone one of the most comprehensive revitalizations in its history. Enhancements include the restoration of the Mansion’s exterior, interior, and structural core; the return of significant original artifacts; the protection of the Washingtons’ tomb and the iconic Potomac River view; expanded educational offerings and access; a fully reimagined Museum and Education Center; strengthened annual funding and endowment; and a renewed national awareness of Mount Vernon’s mission of preservation and education. In 2026, Mount Vernon stands stronger than ever—ready to inspire generations to come.
This is our birthday gift to the nation.
Mansion Restoration
Proceeds from this year’s Ball will support the revitalization of George Washington’s Mansion. In 2023, Mount Vernon launched a landmark, multi-faceted preservation project to safeguard the Mansion’s original building fabric and ensure its structural integrity for generations to come. This revolutionary project includes:
- Designing and installing a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC) for the Mansion to better control the environment of the historic rooms and cellar.
- Improving drainage in and around the Mansion’s historic cellar with new underfloor drains.
- Repairing sections of the Mansion’s framing and masonry to further strengthen the foundation.
